While on on vacation this summer, I got to go to a pretty cool poetry workshop. One of the things we did was write our own poem, but there were rules that we had to follow. I'll explain them as I go on.
We were split into groups and given a word: "Red" and we had to write something that came to mind like, red car, red blood, red rose, etc.. I got "red light" than we had to take the letter of the first word (so with "r" from "red") and go three letters down the alphabet (that would be "u") and create a new word that would go with our second word (light) so here is what I got:
red - light - ultraviolet
smooth - skin - vulnerable
soothing - lips - velvet
beautiful - perfume - exotic
fast - car - indigo
After we had finished, we had to take the new words that we wrote and create a poem with it. So I had to use ultraviolet light, vulnerable skin, velvet lips, exotic perfume, and indigo car, all in the new poem. We didn't have a lot of time so the writing process was very intuitive and you really couldn't edit your stuff and sit and meditate on the best phrase to express "happy" lolol or something like that. Once we wrote out the poem we had to read it backwards, it actually turned out quite interesting! Some people's poems made more sense backwards!! XD
So here is mine backwards:
The indigo car speeds towards it's destination,
Under vulnerable skin,
The lick of velvet lips and the smell of exotic perfume,
Full of neon and ultraviolet lights,
A city scape at night.
Now, here is my poem right-side-up:
A city scape at night,
Full of neon lights and ultraviolet lights,
The lick of velvet lips and the smell of exotic perfume,
Under vulnerable skin,
The indigo car speeds towards it's destination.
Our group members would choose two lines that they liked the best, and from those two lines we would create another poem. Here is my finished result:
The indigo car speeds towards its destination
As the engine growls beneath it's whine,
The pavement lines slip away one by one like boyfriends falling by the wayside,
The lick of velvet lips
Groove to the beat as she pursues her next catch.
lololol, I was told that it was "sassy" :D
